Good nutrition is important for everyone but especially if you are having to deal with an illness and especially if that illness is cancer. If you have choosen radiation or chemotherapy as treatments, these may affect your appetite. But it is important to stay strong. Good nutrition will make you feel better, will help you maintain your weight, decrease the risk of infection, help you tolerate some side effects and will give you extra energy.
Take note of what you are putting into your body and see what you could change.
Change is hard sometimes especially if you have had the same diet for some years. But you need to look at what you are trying to achieve here - wellness. When you first make changes to your diet, things will seem different and difficult, but persevere.
What you put into your body will play a very big part in your healing process.
One food that we chose to eliminate from our diet was red meat. We were eating meat at least 5 nights per week. We were your typical New Zealand family - meat and 3 vegetables on the plate at night.
Red meat takes a long time to digest and it has been proven that it is not good to eat that often in your diet, especially if you have cancer or are recovering from cancer. Red meat sits in your gut and rots, because of this your body produces more acid to break down the meat. When you have cancer you DO NOT want more acid in your body. The idea is to keep it alkaline (more about an alkaline diet in another article).
Eat lots of vegetables, fruit and lentils. Recommended vegetables are carrots, parsnip, silver beet, spinach, beetroot, peas, pumpkin, garlic, onions, parsley, peppers, sweet potato, turnips, watercress and yams.
Another good source is lentils and they can be cooked in all sorts of ways. Again there are good recipe books out there to help you when you get stuck.
Increase your vitamin and mineral intake. Vitamins and minerals will help the immune system stay strong. Even if you think you are eating a well balanced diet with plenty of vegetables and fruits, you need to have a booster. During cancer treatment your body will be challenged and pushed to the limit. Keep up the vitamins and minerals to help your recovery.
Good Food vs Bad Food
Bad Food can accelerate your aging process, cause weight gain, weaken your immunity and increase the chances of heart dis-ease, cancer, arthritis, diabetes.
Good food boosts your thinking power, it can lift your mood, it will reduce stress and play a huge part in the fight against cancer by releasing agents that can cause abnormal cell growths to shrink or completely disappear. With the help of good food and good thoughts your body can heal itself. Our body takes a beating from us. We expose it to all sorts of horrible things and yet it keeps functioning. It may not function to its fullest capacity but it keeps working for us.
Your body is your temple - treat it that way. Treat it with the respect it deserves. Put good food into it and it will thank you.
